Starting from Stuttgart – Getting around

A fully integrated system

Stuttgart public transport is fully integrated. That means you can use the same ticket on underground trains (Stadtbahn), buses and the local rail network (S-Bahn)

Buying a ticket

The local transport association is called VVS. You can use their website to plan journeys. They also have an App which you can download from  Apple StoreGoogle Play Store or Windows Phone Store.  It provides real-time travel information

You can buy tickets at machines, at stops and on platforms.

Ways to save money

If you intend to do quite a bit of travelling in the city, you can save money if you buy a Day Ticket (7.00 and 15.50 euros depending on how far you want to go in a day).

If you need more information

This blog explains how to Stuttgart public transport system better than I can how the system works.

Travelling further afield

If you are in a group and plan to travel beyond Stuttgart, look out for the Baden-Würtenberg-Ticket. This costs 24 euros for one person and 6 euros per person for up to 4  additional travellers. It entitles you to free travel on all VVS transport, as well as all regional trains (with S RB RE IRE at the beginning) for a full day. For a group of 5 that works out as under 10 euros each.

Another way to see the sights

Look out for the Zahnradbahn – one of only four “rack railways’ in Germany. It was opened in 1884. Great way to tour the city.
