Wormatia Worms

Worms is a historic town on the banks of the Rhine, about 50 miles south of Frankfurt. It claims to be Germany’s oldest city (an assertion challenged by Trier and Cologne). Because of its strategic location it was heavily bombed and severely damaged in the closing months of WW2.

The story of Wormatia Worms began in 1908 with the establishment of a club called SC Wormatia. Numerous mergers and name-changes followed and the club eventually re-emerged after the war with its current name – VfR Wormatia 08 Worms.

In the years leading up to the creation of the Bundesliga in 1963 top-level German football was organised into regional leagues and Worms played mainly in Oberliga Südwest. The club did not qualify for the Bundesliga and spent most of the 1960s and 1970s in the second division.

In 1982 a drop to the third division marked the beginning of a gradual descent as far as the 5th tier Verbandsliga Südwest in 1994. During this period Worms faced severe financial challenges. In 1998 the club moved to the fourth tier. This level of German football has undergone successive changes and reorganisations over the years, but Worms has essentially remained at that level and currently plays in Regionalliga Südwest.

After 320 years turn right onto Wassertumstraße. Follow this road until you get to Alzheyer Straße, which will take you to the ground.

You can also get there by bus. The bus station is right next to the central station. Go to platform C1 and catch the 401 towards Pfiffligheim – and get off at Heinrich-Völker-Bad. Or go to Platform C4 to catch the 408 towards Hochheim/Klinikum. Get off at Abzweig.

You can’t use your match ticket on public transport.
