FC Bayern München

Background

FC Bayern München is one of the best known football clubs in the world, and with 26 national titles and 17 national cups, the most successful club in Germany.  They play in one of the finest stadiums in the world.

The club was founded in 1900, and although it achieved considerable success at a regional level only won the national championship once, in 1932.

Although not included in the Bundesliga when it was formed in 1963, Bayern were promoted two years later.  This promotion winning team included stars such as Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and Sepp Meier.  The next fourteen years were to be hugely successful for Bayern Munich when under Brank Zebec and Udo Lattek they won the national championships four times, the German Cup four times and the European Cup three times.  In 1969 they were the first German team to achieve the double of winning both league and cup

The 1980’s and 1990’s were, by Bayern’s standards less successful, but from 1998 they achieved glittering success at national and international level and for the last three years the Bayern team have appeared almost unstoppable.

Stadium

Bayern play their football at the iconic Allianz Arena. This is a brand new stadium which was completed in 2005 and hosted games in the 2006 World Cup.
It cost 340 million euro and with a capacity of 71000 is the third largest stadium in Germany.
It is renowned for its interesting shape and illuminated exterior.

Tickets

Despite the status of the club and the quality of the football, ticket prices are very reasonable.  The cheapest seats cost 35 euros and standing places cost 15 euros.  The only problem is, they are very hard to come by and games are usually sold out four to five weeks ahead.

Getting there

From the main station to take the tram to Marienplatz (S19) from there you can catch the underground (U6) to Fröttmaning.  It’s then a short walk to the stadium.
