Apart from having a great name, Stuttgarter Kickers have a long and honourable history as one of the oldest clubs in German football. In the early days the club performed well at local and regional level and by the 1930s was playing in one of the top sixteen Gauligen. After the war, the Kickers found themselves back in the second tier where they remained until 1989 when they gained promotion to the Bundesliga. This first spell at the top only lasted for one year, but another promotion the following year meant the club spent 1991/92 in the Bundesliga. For a second time, it was relegated immediately. The club then began a slow drop through the divisions. In 2015/ 2016 relegation to the Regionalliga Süd meant they dropped out of the professional league altogether. After a further relegation in 2018 Stuttgarter Kickers fell to the 5th tier Oberliga Baden Würtemberg.
